Limon describes in his "An Unfinished Memoir" (Edited by Lynn
Garafola,
1999) the days of Bennington School of the Dance, 1937:
Anna Sokolow also had an anti-Fascist piece which she called Facade-Esposizione
Italiana. At dress rehearsals I looked at it with admiration
and envy.
It was replete with stunning imagery and passages that moved me to say,
"I
wish I had done that!" Already , in 1937, Anna possessed that singular
power
of communicating with unerring directness, of using the abstract in
gesture
to create almost brutally impassioned drama. She was on her way to
becoming
what she is today, the most disturbingly human of choreographers
