Anna and Israel

Anna Sokolow  is a major figure in the development of  dance and theater in Israel.

1953: She was invited, on the recommendation of Jerome Robbins, by the
American Fund for Israel  ( America-Israel Cultural Foundation  [AICF] )  to teach for the Inbal dance theater in Israel. Since then she returned almost  every  year up to the mid nineties.

1957:  Prepared the Inbal Dance Theater for their American tour.

1958... : Israel Opera (of Edis de Philippe).

1960:  One of her main works : Dreams, later to become her personal
indictment of Nazi Germany.
 

1962: founded the Lyric Theater in Tel Aviv, with the assistance of the
American Israel Foundation.

Ze'eva Cohen, Ehud Ben- David, Rina Shaham, Galia Gat,
Yigal Paz, Ofra Ben Zvi, Avraham Montzour, Gideon Avrahami,
Yinon Ne'eman, Liora Hachmi, Johana Peled,
Avrham Tzuri, Yitzhak Ben-Nisim, Yossi Kipnis, Dalia Harlap,
Miriam Prever, Rina Schenfeld, Shimon Siani.

The program, designed to emphasize the relationship between theatre, music, and dance, included:
L'Histoire du Soldat (The soldier tale)
The Treasure (score by Nathan Mishori, from a fairy tale by the Yiddish writer Isaac Loeb Peretz)
Dreams, Suite No. five (Bach), Opus 62, Rooms, and Lyric Suite.
During the course of this artistically productive period
Baroness Batsheva (Bethsabee) de Rothchild announced the formation
of a new Modern Dance company: Batsheva. Rothschild offered a full time salary...
Martha Graham agreed to give artistic support and works from her repertoire...
Anna and the Lyric theatre continued for a while (and did the 1964 season) :
Odes, with a different score
Forms (Macero) and
The Question (Webern).
 
 

1964: She did  the choreography of the first Israeli Musical :
"King Solomon and Shlamai the Cobbler"  by Sami Groneman at the "Cameri" theater
with songs and translation by : Nathan Alterman
                         music by : Alexander Argov
                        among the actors: ILI Gorlizki and Yona Atari.

1990: Israel celebrated her 80th birthday by planting 350 trees in her
honor.

In Israel Anna worked with all the important dance and theater companies
and Schools. (Partial list:   Cameri Theatre, Habima Theatre, Haifa Theatre (Wings, 1979),   Nissan Nativ Theatre School, Ohel Theatre,
Batsheva Dance Company (Dreams, Rooms, Deserts, Les Noces...),
Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company, Kol Demama Dance Company (Dreams...), Yaron Margolin.

Anna Sokolow is an Honorary Fellow of The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance ( Rubin Academy )
together with Isaac Stern and Mstislav Rostropovich.
